The UNM Arena “The Pit” project posed an interesting challenge for our BIM team. The project consisted of 40 new suites, 300 club seats, upgraded seating, video boards and a remodeled and expanded concourse, as well as locker rooms that had to remain fully functional for 70 events. Temporary Certificates of Occupancy were required for each event. Careful coordination, construction phasing and extra measures were taken to ensure safety for the large number of visitors to the arena.

The process for developing the BIM model on this project required that we take the existing 40-year old, as-built documentation and recreate the building and site conditions in Autodesk Revit. Because this structure was to remain fully functional, all life safety and mechanical, electrical and plumbing (MEP) systems were input into the model. Areas of work were analyzed before demolition at the BIM coordination meetings.

The project teams evaluated the effects the demolition and temporary support systems would have on traffic patterns, MEP and life safety systems. Throughout the entire project, not a single event was delayed or canceled.
